World order ranking

Every composite country index is a weighted average of indicators somebody decided to weight. This instrument publishes the distribution instead of the number, so measurement can be told apart from decision.

No country arrives as one number. Coverage differs, dates differ, and missing observations place a boundary around every comparison.

InterpretationThe headline score begins as an uneven evidence surface. Complete-looking ranks can still rest on different observed inputs.

Specification

The published uncertainty is the smallest one

Three sources can enter the band: weights, published governance errors, and the choice of which indicators count. They are not remotely equal.

InterpretationWhich indicators you pick matters more than how precisely the governance indicators are measured. Weight choice dwarfs both. Germany remains within ranks 1 to 7, while Nigeria ranges from 53 to 140: the same uncertainty matters very differently across the table.

BoundaryAt 1,200 draws, Monte Carlo noise is roughly one place, so the measurement row sits at the edge of resolution. The bands measure analyst disagreement, not error in the world.

Bars measure the widening of the median country's rank band, in places, out of 151. The country examples show how unevenly that uncertainty lands across the table.

The evidence supports a range.

The same procedure runs on four countries in turn. The point holds near the top of the table and comes apart further down it. A published rank is most trustworthy where it is least interesting.

What the bands cannot settle

Governance is the only pillar here with a published standard error. Most measurement uncertainty in this index is invisible rather than small.
